SOM File Complications

Frequent SOM Opening Issues

Missing Corel Paradox

When trying to open your SOM file, you get the error "Can't Open SOM File Type". Customarily, this means that Corel Paradox is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your SOM with Corel Paradox, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your SOM file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Outdated Corel Paradox

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Corel Paradox Sort Information file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Corel Paradox installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Corel Paradox Sort Information file version that was created by a newer version of Corel Paradox than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the SOM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right Corel Paradox version on your computer can cause problems opening SOM files.

Other SOM File Issues

Even with the correct version of Corel Paradox installed, you can still experience difficulties opening SOMs. If you're still experiencing problems opening SOM files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • File references in the Windows Registry for SOM are wrong
  • The SOM file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Invalid installation of a SOM-associated program (eg. Corel Paradox)
  • The SOM itself is corrupted
  • Your SOM is infected with malware
  • SOM-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Corel Paradox Sort Information files
