FI File Complications

Common FI Opening Problems

Fortran Removed

You attempt to load your FI file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The FI File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Fortran for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your FI with Fortran, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens FI files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Obsolete Version of Fortran

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Fortran Interface Data file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Fortran from IBM is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Fortran Interface Data file was created by a newer version of Fortran than you have on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FI file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the FI file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Fortran installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading FI Files

Although you might already have Fortran or another FI-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Fortran Interface Data files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading FI files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Windows Registry FI file paths that are incorrect
  • Deletion of the FI file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Invalid installation of a FI-associated program (eg. Fortran)
  • FI file corruption
  • Your FI has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your FI file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Fortran Interface Data files
