Troubleshoot FTN Files

Typical FTN Opening Challenges

MacroMates TextMate Removed

Double-clicking your FTN file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open FTN File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because MacroMates TextMate isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your FTN with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your FTN file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

MacroMates TextMate Requires Update

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Fortran Source Code file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the MacroMates website to download (or purchase) the latest version of MacroMates TextMate. Most of the time your Fortran Source Code file was created by a newer MacroMates TextMate than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FTN file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Primarily, problems experienced when opening FTN files are due to having the incorrect version of MacroMates TextMate installed on your computer.

Other FTN File Opening Causes

Even with the correct version of MacroMates TextMate installed, you can still experience difficulties opening FTNs. Other FTN opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • FTN file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Deletion of the FTN file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Invalid installation of a FTN-associated program (eg. MacroMates TextMate)
  • Your FTN file is corrupted (issues with your Fortran Source Code file itself)
  • Your FTN is infected with malware
  • Hardware associated with FTN has outdated drivers
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Fortran Source Code file successfully

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
